User Alert: Jan 15, 2020: FIA tools and data will be unavailable for a short period on Sunday, January 26, 2020, due to server system maintenance. We apologize for any inconvenience.Nov 6, 2019: EVALIDator users: Due to an unanticipated issue that occurred during server maintenance, EVALIDator is not available at this time . We are hopeful that the issue will be resolved and that EVALIDator will be available soon. We will continue to update alerts as new information is available. Thank you for your patience.Nov 5, 2019: Links to the Carbon On-Line Estimator (COLE) and Southern On-Line Estimator (SOLE) tools have been removed from the Data & Tools page of our site. These tools, developed and maintained by National Council for Air and Stream Improvement, Inc (NCASI), have been unavailable for some time now and are no longer being supported. March 30, 2018: The Forest Service is currently experiencing a server outage. The Computer Information Office staff are working on the situation. Until it is resolved the following tools may be unavailable: EVALIDATOR, DATIM, NWOS Tablemaker. Thank you for your patience.May 29, 2019: EVALIDator users: Users running ratio reports using growth, removals or mortality estimates should ensure they select Output estimates and sampling errors”. If Output estimates” only is selected the output is inaccurate. We are working to correct this anomaly. Thank you for your patience. May 24, 2019: EVALIDator users: EVALIDator’s choropleth mapping is currently not working. We are working to resolve the issue, and apologize for the inconvenience. March 14, 2019: EVALIDator users: If you are running a ratio report where the numerator or denominator is a change estimate (growth, removals, or mortality), do not pick the option to report Output estimates (runs 7 to 8 times faster than with sampling errors)”. Instead stick with the default Output estimates and sampling errors”. This bug has been fixed in the next release of the EVALIDator, which will be deployed in May of 2019.EVALIDator and DataMart users wishing to know what has recently become available see this page: http://apps.fs.fed.us/fiadb-downloads/images/recent_load_history.html September 22, 2015: The EVALIDator is unable to produce estimates of growth, removals and mortality for multiple inventories when "Trend analysis" is chosen as the row classification variable and the inventories chosen have different sampling designs (i.e., a mix of periodic and annual inventories). In the event that a user inadvertently runs such a retrieval the EVALIDator will return zeroes for the periodic inventories and the correct numbers for the annual inventories. We are sorry for any inconvenience. As the Nation’s continuous forest census, our program projects how forests are likely to appear 10 to 50 years from now. This enables us to evaluate whether current forest management practices are sustainable in the long run and to assess whether current policies will allow the next generation to enjoy America’s forests as we do today. FIA reports on status and trends in forest area and location; in the species, size, and health of trees; in total tree growth, mortality, and removals by harvest; in wood production and utilization rates by various products; and in forest land ownership. The Forest Service has significantly enhanced the FIA program by changing from a periodic survey to an annual survey, by increasing our capacity to analyze and publish data, and by expanding the scope of our data collection to include soil, under story vegetation, tree crown conditions, coarse woody debris, and lichen community composition on a subsample of our plots. The FIA program has also expanded to include the sampling of urban trees on all land use types in select cities. FIA is managed by the Research and Development organization within the USDA Forest Service in cooperation with State and Private Forestry and National Forest Systems. FIA traces its origin back to the McSweeney - McNary Forest Research Act of 1928 (P.L. 70-466). This law initiated the first inventories starting in 1930.
